Description
An outstanding Victorian engraving, published in 1855 by the celebrated British engraver Charles George Lewis (1808–1880) after the monumental painting by Thomas Jones Barker (1815–1882), one of the foremost historical painters of the Victorian era.
Entitled "Napoleon the Great Rebuking His Officers at Bassano", the engraving illustrates the famous episode following the Battle of Bassano (1796). Rather than celebrating military triumph, the composition portrays Napoleon admonishing his officers after witnessing a loyal dog mourning its fallen master on the battlefield. The emotional scene became widely admired during the nineteenth century as a powerful reflection on honour, humanity and the tragic cost of war.
Lewis's engraving faithfully translates Barker's dramatic composition into an extraordinary monochrome print, capturing every subtle detail—from the fallen soldier and grieving dog to the distant troops and Napoleon's commanding figure. The exceptional quality of the engraving demonstrates the remarkable technical mastery for which Charles G. Lewis was internationally renowned.
Presented in an elegant mahogany frame with gilt slip, the print measures an impressive 90 × 142 cm, giving it a commanding presence that makes it ideal for a library, study, entrance hall or sophisticated living space. Beyond its decorative impact, it is a work rich in historical narrative and Victorian artistic culture.
A distinguished nineteenth-century engraving that combines historical significance, masterful craftsmanship and timeless decorative elegance, making it a superb acquisition for collectors of Napoleonic memorabilia, military art or fine antique prints.
